The career switcher’s sequence: which comes first?

Three assets move a career across functions: a qualification, evidence of doing the work, and people who already do it. Switchers almost always shop for them in that order, because the qualification is the only one of the three with an enrol button. The order that works is close to the reverse, and getting the order right is worth more than any individual purchase on the list.

Why paper-first fails the switcher

A qualification certifies capability; it does not create a vacancy, and it does not answer the interviewer’s only real question, which is what you have done. A switcher holding fresh paper and no evidence competes against insiders holding both, and loses politely. This is the machinery behind our verdict on the career-change situation: the degree is usually the wrong first purchase, not a wrong purchase absolutely. Sequence, not merit, is the problem being solved here.

First: manufacture experience where you already stand

Every function borders its neighbours, and the border regions are understaffed everywhere. The finance-curious operations manager volunteers for the costing review; the salesman eyeing marketing takes on the territory analysis nobody enjoys. Six months of border work produces the one thing no programme can print: a concrete answer to “what have you done in this line?” It is unglamorous, it happens inside the job you already hold, and it is the fastest of the three assets to acquire.

Second: borrow the network before you need it

The people already in the target function hold two things you lack: its vocabulary, and its early information — the openings that are discussed before they are posted. You do not need to charm them; you need to do adjacent work near them, which the first step has already arranged. A network assembled this way is made of people who have watched you work, and that is the only kind that converts when a role appears.

Third: qualify to consolidate, not to enter

Taken last, the qualification finally does a job it is good at: it removes the residual objection, formalises what the evidence already shows, and satisfies whatever written rule the new function’s grades apply. Sized honestly, it is often not an MBA at all — a one-year postgraduate diploma in the target field covers the specialisation gap in half the time, and a short certificate covers a single missing skill in weeks.

What the right order does to the interview

Run in this order, the three assets stop being three separate claims and become one story: you did the border work, the people who saw it will say so, and the paper certifies the direction you had already taken. The interviewer’s question changes from “why should we let you in?” to “why has nobody given you this role yet?” — and that second question is the one offers come out of. Run in the reverse order, the same three purchases produce a CV that reads as a wish: qualification acquired, experience absent, referees who have only ever seen you in your old function.

The exception: functions with a gate

Where a written rule blocks entry without the paper — some regulated roles, some employers’ matrices — the sequence legitimately reverses and the qualification moves first. Even then, read the rule’s exact words before buying anything, because the instrument it names decides what you need and what you can skip. Quote it into the worksheet and let the sentence choose for you.

A sector note: switching into pharma

Some destinations are vocabulary-dense enough that the study genuinely belongs earlier in the sequence. Pharmaceutical sales and marketing is one: launch planning, prescriber behaviour, regulatory rhythm — general management syllabi cover little of it. The sector-specific option in our own network is IIPM — the Indian Institute of Pharmaceutical Marketing, Lucknow, an autonomous non-profit institute established in 1998 — whose management programmes are diplomas the institute awards in its own name at masters level, not university degrees, a distinction this site keeps visible everywhere it appears. We have run it through the decision tool at iipm.onlinemba.me. One line first, in the interest of plain dealing: this site belongs to a network that has programmes of its own at IIPM and its sister institute IICT, so weigh our pointer as you would any interested party’s, and confirm the details directly with the institute.

The sequence, on one line

Evidence first, people second, paper third — unless a written gate reverses it. And if your “switch” is really a climb inside the function you already hold, that is a different problem with different tools: promotions without an MBA takes it apart.
